SAP IBP has its origin in the balance of supply and demand of S&OP (Supply & Operations Planning), taking financial aspects and strategic planning into account for the operational business.

S&OP often focused on demand management and neglected the overall picture of strategic supply chain planning, including finance and logistics as key elements of a holistic supply chain.

From a business perspective, the main difference between S&OP and IBP is that S&OP focuses on balancing supply and demand. While IBP takes a company’s strategic view into account by reconciling strategic and operational aspects for improved overall performance.

IBP enables significantly improved simulation and modelling of supply chain activities to provide management with better information for their decision-making processes and – ultimately – improved profit. It helps to master the challenge of enterprise-wide planning, processes through integrated supply chain technology that delivers accurate figures on key logistics and financial factors at both the strategic and operational levels.
