SAP AI Solutions – intelligent automation powered by Artificial Intelligence

CNT helps companies implement SAP-integrated AI for scalable business success

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence is the basis of SAP AI solutions. Thinking like humans, acting like humans. Artificial Intelligence has many definitions, and most people associate AI with chatbots. However, the technology is much wider and includes machine learning, computer vision, neural networks, data analytics, deep learning, natural language processing, biometrics, neuroscience, generative AI, and more. AI models are trained using large sets of business data using techniques such as (semi)supervised-, unsupervised-, and reinforcement learning. SAP AI solutions are all based on these technologies.

AI and SAP – Why now

Although current available SAP AI technologies such as SAP Generative AI, SAP Machine Learning, SAP AI Integration, SAP AI Services, SAP Embedded AI, and SAP Agents, might be newly released technology, the AI technology itself has existed for more than 30 years.

That’s right. Think of cars and how AI is used in your GPS. Think of games and how AI algorithms are used to compete with users. Think of security systems and how AI is used to authorize people for login using face recognition. The areas are endless; AI is already embedded in our daily lives for a while. SAP has progressed along the same lines, and SAP AI is now embedded in SAP Business Processes through the SAP AI Use Cases. For example, AI in SAP

Finance, AI in SAP Supply Chain, Predictive Analytics in SAP, AI-Driven Process Automation SAP, AI for SAP Manufacturing, and many more.

So why this new hype today? Most people really got exposed to AI because of improved performance of chatbots such as ChatGPT, MS Copilot, and others. These new systems enabled simple, user-friendly and human-like interactions using our own natural language. Moreover, they are freely offered at no cost to almost everyone with an internet connection. And the responses of these systems are quite impressive. In addition, some new usages that go beyond our imagination all contributed to the current boom in AI – think of self-driving cars, drones for deliveries, generative content creation of art, etc.

The following evolutions contributed to the current breakthrough:

  • Explosion of data capturing – worldwide digitalization and especially the use of cell phones and apps are now creating billions of new data points daily. With these volumes of data generated at worldwide level, many new AI technologies can be developed, and new AI models are trained. To develop AI models, data is needed – and now available.

  • Enhanced processing – thanks to new advanced chip technologies at unprecedented levels (e.g. NVIDIA GPUs), some previous hurdles in using massive amounts of data have been overcome. New AI systems today are based on a significant number of parameters (e.g. GPT-4 has 100 trillion parameters) which could not be processed in the past.

  • Learning technologies and models – at the same time new mathematical models and technologies such as convolutional and recurrent networks, transformers, multimodal systems, agents, generative AI, and many more have been developed. Supported by developing platforms, technologies and languages such as e.g. PyTorch, Tensorflow, etc.

  • Lower costs of cloud solutions – and finally, the costs to store, collect and manage massive amounts of data in large farms using cloud solutions are reduced significantly while concerns on security, ownership and governance have been addressed.

The combination of the above evolutions resulted in the current explosion of new AI technologies. Vendors are extending their offerings with AI technologies, and SAP is no exception. Businesses can’t delay AI anymore as efficiency benefits are remarkable.

AI – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that enables machines to demonstrate human-like reasoning and capabilities such as autonomous decision making. AI is the broad concept of creating intelligent machines, ML is a subset of AI where systems learn from data without explicit programming, DL is a type of ML using deep neural networks for complex patterns, and Generative AI is a subset of DL that creates new content based on learned data patterns.

A large language model (LLM) is an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system that understands, processes, and generates human language after being trained on vast amounts of text data . LLMs use deep learning techniques, particularly transformer neural networks and self-attention mechanisms, to identify patterns and relationships in language, enabling them to perform tasks like text summarization, translation, question answering, and content creation.

SAP has embedded AI throughout its enterprise portfolio. Examples of SAP AI products are SAP Joule, SAP Joule Co-Pilot, SAP Joule Studio, SAP Joule Agents, SAP AI Co-Pilot, SAP BTP AI (Business Technology Platform), SAP AI Foundation, SAP AI Core, SAP AI Launchpad, SAP Generative AI Hub, SAP AI Agents, SAP Fiori with AI.

SAP AI is the suite of enterprise-ready artificial intelligence services, applications, and features, known as SAP Business AI, embedded within SAP’s business software ecosystem to automate processes, provide intelligent insights, and enhance user productivity. Key components include the AI copilot Joule, which offers out-of-the-box generative AI to assist with tasks like document processing and data classification, and SAP AI Core, a platform for managing AI assets. SAP AI focuses on delivering secure, scalable, and responsible AI solutions tailored to various business functions, including finance, supply chain, and human resources.

By integrating AI directly into SAP applications, businesses can improve operational efficiency, reduce errors, accelerate innovation, and foster better collaboration, all while adhering to high standards of relevance, reliability, and responsibility.

SAP Joule is an AI-powered copilot and digital assistant that integrates with SAP business applications to help complete tasks, make data-driven decisions, and automate processes by using natural language processing (NLP) . It functions as a collaborative AI assistant, leveraging business data to provide personalized and contextually relevant support across various business functions, from finance and supply chain to HR and development.

SAP agents are digital entities that perform tasks within the SAP ecosystem , ranging from modern collaborative AI agents like Joule agents that automate business processes using AI and natural language to technical infrastructure agents that facilitate secure data transfer or monitor systems. Recent advancements focus on SAP AI Agents, intelligent systems that leverage large language models and business context to autonomously manage complex, multi-step business processes, collaborating across functions to enhance efficiency and decision-making.

SAP AI foundation includes the SAP generative AI hub in SAP AI Core and SAP AI Launchpad, providing trusted and scalable management of AI artifacts. This enables AI-driven extensions of your applications and custom-built AI solutions on SAP BTP.

Via SAP Generative Hub, SAP has integrated over 30 generative AI models across various solutions.

Most SAP AI features are integrated as standard into SAP’s Cloud Platforms, while others need specific custom development. Contact us for an in-depth discussion on preconditions to use many of the SAP AI technologies in your environment.
